At Timber Trail Lodge we offer several opportunities for our guests to experience a remote lake fishing trip. These trips can be motorized or non-motorized and be a guided or a self-guided trip depending on your desires. Our Lodge has direct access to the Boundary Waters and we service all Ely area entry points into the Boundary Waters. These trips will provide you with some of the best fishing in North America. We will provide a quick overview of these trips, but you will need to call to get more details, (800-777-7348). Advance planning is helpful but not absolutely necessary. For all of these trips we need to obtain the permit needed to enter the Boundary Waters. We have many guests who return year after year to experience these adventure fishing trips.
The Kawishiwi River is a canoe only portion of the Boundary Waters. Timber Trail Lodge has direct access to the Kawishiwi River. You can enter the Kawishiwi River with a no cost day use canoe permit. The river is a slow moving river with abundant walleye, northern pike and bass. To enter the river you can paddle from the resort or use one of the canoes we have staged on an island next to the entry point for the river. Pack a lunch, or bring the family. There is abundant wildlife, islands to relax on, and fantastic wilderness scenery to enjoy. This trip can be guided or self-guided.
This trip is a guided trip and requires the use of one of our square stern canoes with portage wheels. The trip requires a short motorized trip in the square stern canoe and then a 2 mile portage that is reasonably easy to traverse with the light canoe. The trip is limited to 2 guests plus the guide per square stern canoe. The Bass fishing can be absolutely fantastic, and we have never had a disappointed guest.
Other species of fish are available on this trip. If you like bass fishing, this is the lake for you.
Experience some of Northern Minnesota's finest fishing. This is a guided trip using one of our portage boats with attached portage wheels. This trip requires the guide and the guests to portage the boat over two reasonably traversed portages. An average level of fitness is helpful. It is a full day trip so plan to pack a lunch or request a guide prepared shore lunch. All species of fish found in our waters are available, but walleye is often the preferred species. The remoteness is what makes this trip so enjoyable with the wonderful fishing and great scenery. This is a trip full of memories.
This trip can be guided or self guided, but does require a motorized shuttle to the portage entry point into this remote lake. The canoe portage is approximately 1/2 miles long but well worth the exercise. It is not uncommon to catch a 20" plus Small Mouth Bass or an occasional Large Mouth Bass of similar size. I have personally camped on this lake and spent several wonderful days catching many Bass. A no-cost canoe day pass is all that is required to spend a day fishing this wonderful lake, plus the boat shuttle feeand a motorized portage fee into the main lake. This lake is a bass haven.
For this trip you never need to leave the comfort of the guide's boat. This trip is not restrictive for fitness, gender, age or fiscal abilities. It does require your ability to spend a full day in the boat except for a rest break or a shore lunch upon request. This trip provides excellent fishing for all species of fish found in our waters. A motorized day pass is required to enter these waters by boat so advanced planning is essential. The trip is restricted to 2 or 3 fisherpersons in the guide's boat, and is a full day trip. I will do this trip several times each summer and never grow tired of the experience.
Timber Trail Lodge can also arrange for guided or self-guided trips for Muskie, Lake Trout or Rainbow Trout fishing. Guides are always recommended for those unfamiliar with our waters.
