What we offer visitors to Ely, Minnesota

Location - Only 7 miles from town... Timber Trail Resort is located on a chain of four lakes offering many miles of water to explore and fish.  In addition to the four lakes, you also have direct access into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, where you can paddle a canoe for many miles into the wilderness.

White Iron Chain of Lakes - The chain's four interconnected lakes include White Iron Lake, Farm Lake, Garden Lake and South Farm Lake.  Farm, White iron and Garden Lakes have no motor restrictions.  (any size boat and motor is allowed)  South Farm Lake is in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and is a restricted lake.  We are also the closest resort to the N. Kawishiwi River and this paddle only portion of the Boundary Waters.  View our webcam overlooking Farm Lake

Boundary Waters - We have direct access to the BWCA by water.  Our guests can experience the BWCA right from their doorstep with excellent day and overnight canoe trips.  We provide a shuttle service to the BWCA for fishing, self guided and guided canoe trips.

Fishing - Our chain of lakes contains an abundance of Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Crappie.  Our veteran guide, Rob Nelson, spends over 100 days each summer guiding customers.  He is available for advice to our guests by marking maps and answering your fishing questions.  Fishing information

Accommodations - our cabins range from 1 to 6 bedrooms in size.  They are modern housekeeping cabins and have fully equipped kitchens - many have dishwashers!  All have decks, grills, picnic tables, Adirondak chairs, fans, campfire rings, adequate parking, boat docking, and more.  We are open all year.  Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.  See our Cabins & Accommodations

Motel rooms with Kitchenettes are also available.  These are modern rooms with fully supplied kitchens.  They are ideal for 2 to 3 people.  They provide the same access to all our resort vacation activities and amenities.

Canoe Trip Outfitting - Timber Trail Outfitters is a full service canoe outfitter.  We offer full and partial outfitting services for canoeing the BWCA.  We service all Ely area entry points.   See our outfitting website

Bill, Marge, Bill and Brian - your hosts!

About Us

Bill & Marge Forsberg along with their family moved to Northern Minnesota in 1994. Our son Bill was just graduating from the University of Cincinnati and soon joined his parents and brother (Brian, a 7th grader) in the management of the family’s new adventure Timber Trail Lodge. Our daughter Lynne spent her summers helping the family at the resort until she graduated from the University of Illinois.  After graduation, she remained in Illinois and eventually married and settled in the Chicago area.

Bill & Marge grew up in upstate New York. Marge is a graduate of the University of New York at Geneseo, and Bill is a graduate of Ithaca College. Our summers were often spent visiting the Adirondacks and enjoying the wilderness activities found there as well as many summers in the Finger Lakes region.

After college Bill served one year overseas as a Lieutenant in the Army Security Agency in Korea. Upon completion of his military commitment with the U.S. Army, Bill pursued various career opportunities while Marge concentrated on raising the family and on her career in primary education. Bill spent the majority of his career in retail, and ultimately retired from the corporate world as the V.P of Stores for a national retail chain of specialty stores.

In the year 2005, Brian graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth and joined his parents and brother in the management of Timber Trail Lodge.

Son Bill ultimately founded and developed his own business, Boundary Waters Outfitters, which has become an integral part of the family’s pursuit of offering a wide range of vacation opportunities for guests visiting Ely, Minnesota and Timber Trail Lodge.

The family has developed roots in Minnesota as we have come to love and enjoy Ely, Minnesota and the wonderful life this spectacular wilderness area offers ourselves and those who come to visit our Lodge, Ely and the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area.

It is the many returning guests we have had the wonderful opportunity to meet that have ultimately provided the greatest enjoyment for the family here at Timber Trail Lodge and Boundary Waters Outfitters. We hope you will join us for a wonderful wilderness vacation.
